How We Grew the Green Cleaning Movement in 2018

This was an exciting year for our Green Clean Schools program as we considered our progress, highlighted current leaders and thought about the future of the movement.

We Recognized Leading Programs

The Green Cleaning Award for Schools & Universities recognizes schools with innovative programs that protect health and the environment while galvanizing the community around green cleaning. There are two categories of winners, K-12 and Higher Education, each with its own Honorable Mention, Silver and Grand Awards. Each year, our winners impress us with their innovative approaches to green cleaning and teach us even more about the opportunities for sustainable and health-minded cleaning in schools.

We Welcomed Four New Steering Committee Members

The Green Clean Schools Steering Committee (formerly known as the GCS Leadership Council) is comprised of 12 dedicated facility managers from schools and universities across the country who work with award-winning, pioneering green cleaning programs. These on-the-ground green cleaning leaders have not only helped create healthier and safer educational facilities for their communities, but also they demonstrate a commitment to leading their peers and inspiring the green cleaning movement. This year, we were honored to welcome four new members to the Committee. Read more.

We Educated Green Cleaning Practitioners

Almost 300 people participated in Healthy Schools Campaign’s Green Clean Schools Track at the ISSA Show North America 2018 in October. Programming featured informative and interactive sessions on infection control, on-site generation, creating a culture of sustainability and more! Featured speakers included members of the Green Clean Schools Steering Committee sharing information about their award winning programs.

We Benchmarked the Green Cleaning Movement to Plan for the Future

We partnered with ISSA to develop a survey to benchmark the level of green cleaning adoption in schools and universities across the country. We found that more than 97 percent of schools are implementing green cleaning to some extent! This report will allow us to provide schools and universities with tools and resources they need to strengthen their green cleaning program and make sure all children attend school in clean and healthy facilities.
